What organisations are behind this site?
nef (the new economics foundation) is a UK based independent think-and-do tank that inspires and demonstrates real economic well-being.
nef aims to improve quality of life by promoting innovative solutions that challenge mainstream thinking on economic, environment and social issues. nef works in partnership and puts people and the planet first.nef was founded in 1986 by the leaders of The Other Economic Summit (TOES) which forced issues such as international debt onto the agenda of the G7 and G8 summits.
nef’s role in this project has been to provide the structure for the argument map and to make sure that the content was as unbiassed as possible. This was done by drawing on a variety of sources and by checking it with a variety of experts on both sides of the debate.
Release is the UK’s centre of expertise on drugs and drugs law – providing free and confidential specialist advice to the public and professionals. Release also campaigns for changes to UK drug policy to bring about a fairer and more compassionate legal framework to manage drug use in our society.
Release believes that the present regime for the regulation of drugs will be regarded by future generations as one of the great policy disasters of the modern period. These arrangements result in far too many abuses of human rights, fail to protect individual and public health, erode respect for the law, undermine democracy and generate corruption. The War on Drugs is in fact a recipe for a society at war with itself, and this is what we find when we examine the state of global drug control.
Release’s role in this project has been to make sure that nef were aware of the relevant sources of information and to provide contacts – on both sides of the debate – who could check our text. Release also managed the development of the software to produce online argument maps.
